How do you tally SAT scores?
For the math and verbal sections, 1 point is added for every correct question and 1/4 point is subtracted for every incorrect multiple choice question. No points are taken for unanswered questions or non-multiple choice questions. In the essay section, 1 point is added for every correct answer and the deductions are 1/4 for 5-choice, 1/3 for 4-choice and 1/2 for 3-choice questions answered incorrectly.

The 'old' SAT had only reading and math sections for a total maximum score of 1600.
