Zoos are not all the same. There are zoos that treat animals extremely well, and zoos that treat animals very badly. Some zoos put animals in beautifully recreated habitats, and others put them in small cages. Some are well funded, some are badly funded.

Most animals are usually happy because they get great care and respect from zoo keepers and are treated if sick. Most zoo's try to keep the environment the animals are in look like their natural habitat. They also only get contact with animals they want to see and get all the food they need.

Do zoos abuse animals?

Yes, zoos do protect animals. If they were out in the wild many wouldn't have any chance of surviving. But in zoos their food, water, any supplements, or shots they need are brought to them. Any medical attention they need is available for them. They are usually cared for and have enough room to move, play, and many times they are given "enrichment toys and food". Plus they are protected from their predators, and babies abandoned are hand reared. Almost all zoos protect the animals from the visitors too, not allowing the guests to harass them, throw things at them, or be too loud, or taunt the animals. It's not always perfect or ideal, but as a general rule, most zoos that are accredited, or certified do try to protect and care for their animals.

How were animals treated in the in the Victorian times?

They weren't treated very well. All that most people wanted was money, they didn't care about their animals. Horses especially weren't treated well. Other animals just got fed for the slaughter house.

Do zoos protect or hurt animals well do they?

Zoos employ animal doctors (veterinarians ), nutritionists, and other professionals to give the best care possible to their animals. Most zoos do this, in an attempt to try, and protect their animals, and keep them as healthy as possible. The average zoo does not set out to hurt, or neglect their animals. Some small, and unregulated zoos, (private collections, or petting zoos), may not be as concerned for the animal's welfare as they should be. Anytime, there is a question in a vistors mind, as to the conditions of an animal, or it's living quarters, it needs to be reported discreetly, but quickly, to the proper authorities. But on average, most zoos, try to keep all their animals healthy and happy.

Do animals in zoos go crazy?

That's kind of a biased way of phrasing the question. Some animals in some zoos do begin to exhibit behavioral disorders. Good zoos work hard to provide the animals with a comfortable, engaging environment to minimize the chances of this happening, but not all zoos are good zoos and some animals are more sensitive than others.

How are animals treated at zoos?

Most mainstream zoos attempt to provide a 'natural habitat' for the animals in their care. Zookeepers have detailed formulas that pertain to each animals care and feeding to ensure long lives and reproduction. Many zoos, however, do not have the space to provide all of their animals as large a habitat as is comfortable for the specific animals or groups of animals.
