In a way... the Maximum Ride series is based on a character in two of James Patterson's earlier books, The Lake House and When The Wind Blows, which features a girl named Max who escapes a despicable place called the School. But most of the similarities end there, considering Max is 12 in those books and 14 in the series. (She would've been 12 when Jeb disappeared.) And the fact that in When the Wind Blows, Max's wings are attached to her arms.
