Generally arthropod skin is not soft; arthropods rely upon their exoskeleton for structural support (and for protection) and as such it usually need to be tough. Crustaceans further harden it with calcium carbonate via biomineralization.

Since arthropods need to periodically moult (ecdysis) they go through cycles of soft exoskeletons in order to grow during the moult; the new "skin" hardens and expand with time, and during this period they usually hide, owing to their increased vulnerability.

How would taking in water or air before a new exoskeleton hardens help an arthropod?

Arthropod means "jointed legs," because arthropods are covered with a hard skin ("crab shells" are the hard skin of crabs) and they move by flexing joints along their hard skin. When they grow, they have to grow inside their hard skin. But, if the skin is too tight, there's no space! By taking in air or water when their shell is still soft, arthropods can "pump up" and make a nice roomy shell to grow in. When they fill that shell up, they crawl out of it, and then pump up the soft skin underneath. The pumped up soft skin hardens into hard skin, and the arthropod is ready to keep growing.

How is molting in snakes different from molting in athropods?

Molting in snakes involves shedding their outer layer of skin in one piece, while molting in arthropods involves shedding their exoskeleton in multiple stages. Snakes shed their skin to accommodate growth and remove parasites, while arthropods molt to grow and repair damage to their exoskeleton. Additionally, molting in snakes is generally less frequent compared to arthropods.

What is the functin of the exoskeleton?

The exoskeleton, a characteristic of arthropods, provides for structural integrity and defines the gross morphology of arthropods. It contains and protects their soft viscera and provides the framework for mobility and all body functions.
