they are in a way better over the manual toothbrushes, in that they, don't abrade your tooth when excess pressure is applied, the tips remain stationary when more pressure is applied, hence less damage to your teeth. how ever its recommended that with a mechanical tooth brush, 5 minutes of brushing is required, whereas its 2 minutes in case of manual brushing.
not necessarily but they can be, it all depends on the way/technique ,so to speak, of how you brush them. If you have bad technique with a regular toothbrush considering an electric toothbrush would be ideal.
