Yes, there was at least a variety of black bears that roamed the riverbeds as far in Colorado as Sterling. I am not sure of Nebraska, as I am a native of Colorado, and have researched the area. The Plains Indians had in-depth folklore and mythology associated with Bear, so you might want to research that.
As far as Grizzlies, and Brown bears, I know of no examples to go off of to prove (or not) their existence out on the Great Plains, sorry.
