I believe that blood specific to rare blood types is often in short supply, however, the blood type O negative, is a type that is known as the "universal donor" and is able to be donated to all people, regardless of blood type, with no adverst effects.

So they don't want to take off most of your blood just because you're small. If you're sick that day, they won't take your donation. They also need a minimal percentage of iron in your blood, which is VERY important.
