Not all the Caliphs are the true successors of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Only first FOUR Caliphs are called Rashidoon - the Rightful Caliphs. Unfortunately, the caliphs after Hazrat Ali RAU didn't follow the teachings of Islam in letter and spirit. They can't be called the Rightful Caliphs.

Yes. It was a democratic process called Ashura or Intikhabat where leaders in the Muslim community voted on who would succeed Mohammed. (The word for "successor" in Arabic is "Caliph".) They elected Abu Bakr. This infuriated Shiites who believed that Mohammed had already prophesied on who his successor should be, 'Ali, and this divine revelation could not be undone by man.

Abu Bakr was the next ruler in the Sunni tradition. The Shi'ite do not follow this tradition, believing that it was to have been Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law Ali.
