It's a primary consumer. Primary consumers eat plants (which are producers). Secondary conusmers are carnivores that eat the primary (and sometimes other secondary) producers.

Another example: Gazelles eat plants (making them a primary consumer), Cheetas eat gazelles (making them secondary consumers) since they eat the thing that eats plants.

A caterpillar is a primary consumer. Caterpillars eat plant leaves, and in turn are eaten by other small animals, such as birds.

That would depend on the species of caterpillar, but in general they are primary consumers (herbivores). (Note there are some carnivorous species).
