How does Lupus affect the liver?

Lupus, specifically systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), can affect the liver through autoimmune mechanisms, leading to inflammation and damage. The condition can cause liver dysfunction, manifesting as elevated liver enzymes, and may lead to conditions like autoimmune hepatitis or drug-induced liver injury from medications used to treat lupus. Additionally, lupus can increase the risk of developing fatty liver disease. Regular monitoring of liver function is important for managing lupus patients.

Why did your Systemic Lupus Erythematosus lead to a heart attack?

People with systemic lupus erythematosus have double the risk of cardiovascular events. There are several reasons. Lupus is inflammatory. The inflammation affects the blood vessels ultimately reducing elasticity and increasing the likelihood of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Prednisone, used to treat lupus, also increases the change of atherosclerosis. Some lupus patients experience inflammation of the heart (pericarditis, endocarditis, myocarditis). The pain and fatigue that accompany lupus make those with the disease less likely to exercise thereby increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. The sedentary lifestyle and some of the medcations predispose the lupus patient to obesity, another risk factor in cardiovascular events. The stress and depression that accompany living with an unpredictable chronic condition increase the risk even more. Lupus patients may also have some of the clotting factors (anticardiolipin, lupus anticoagulant, antiphospholipid antibodies) that cause blood clots. Lupus may result anemia, or irregular sizes in red blood cells affecting the amount of oxygen that gets to the heart muscle.

What is the chemotherapy success rate?

It really depends on the individual. How bad off they are, what they are getting the chemo to treat, etc.. So it wouldn't be a fair statistic to group all chemo patients together based just solely on the fact they are receiving chemo

What is lupus of kidney?

Lupus nephritis, or lupus that affects the kidney, occurs in about 40% of systemic lupus cases. Either the immune system mistakenly attacks the kidneys or immune complexes from autoimmune activity elsewhere in the body get deposited in the kidneys, causing inflammation. The result is that the person "spills" protein and cellular casts into the urine. Protein is supposed to be filtered out of the urine and returned to the blood. There are no symptoms of lupus nephritis in the early stages. In progressive stages the patient may have an increase in blood pressure and equal swelling in both lower extremities. Regular urinalysis is the best way to catch lupus nephritis early when it is easiest to treat. The specific type of lupus nephritis is determined by a kidney biopsy. The type or classification determines the treatment plan.
