Deer are nowhere near being extinct. In fact, in the south deer are becoming more plentiful.
I live in Iowa, and in many areas they are so plentiful that there isn't enough food to support the population. In the middle of my town, Waterloo, there is a large wooded area (that is partly a nature reserve) that actually allows deer hunting - bow or crossbow - every few years due to the overpopulation!
