The numeral system that we use today are designated Arabic or Hindu-Arabic numerals which are: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and 9. The system differs from the Roman Numeral system in that it has a specific symbol (not letter) for each number and the zero has been added to facilitate mathematical operations.

Oddly enough, with the exception of 1 and 9, most Westerners would have difficulty reading actual Arabic numerals as their equivalent number (see link)
