Dogs are carnivores and meat provides all the nutrients a dog needs. However, dogs are very adaptable and can scavenge for food, so their stomachs can deal with some vegetable matter. Plants and vegetables can be used as part of a dog's diet, but they aren't a necessity.

When dogs get sick they eat grass and maybe a few leaves in order to aid digestion. Eating grass is for medicinal purposes, but doesn't not provide a dog with nutrients.

While dogs are very adaptable, but just because they can survive on an omnivorous diet does not mean it is the best diet for them. The assumption that dogs are natural omnivores remains to be proven, whereas the truth about dogs being natural carnivores is very well-supported by the evidence available to us.
