Cats, basically, are better at catching mice, rats, etc., than dogs because they are faster, more agile and can get into places many dogs would not fit. Plus, just as rodents have the ability to climb a variety of objects, cats are able also to climb whereas dogs are not usually climbers. Some dogs are definitely very good at catching rodents, but on the whole, cats do usually out shine their canine buddies.
Cats and dogs are more closely related than cats and rats.
Domestic cats and dogs are more closely related than cats and rats. Cats and dogs diverge at Order Carnivora, cats to Feliformia and dogs to caniformia. Cats and rats, on the other hand diverge at Infraclass Eutheria, rats to Rodentia and cats to Carnivora.(Dogs belong to Genus Canis, cats to Genus Felis, and rats to Genus Rattus.)Cats and dogs both descend from a weasel-like mammal known as cynodictis.

Cats are very good at getting rid of rats. Just get a few cats and they'll take care of your rat problem.Actually, cats are not that good at catching rats: rats love water, and tend to live where there is lots of it (sewers, docksides, etc.) Cats hate water, but not only that, they are usually well fed and do not have the killer instinct of an animal looking for food. Ferrets, or better still, mink are far better rat catchers.
