That depends completely on the preferences of the owner and the individual temperament of the animal. In general, dogs are friendlier and more loyal, while cats can be independent or aloof. They can both be aggressive, though dogs have the capacity to do much more damage than their smaller feline counterparts.

Realistically, it is impossible to say which is better because it depends on you and on the personality of the pet. I prefer dogs because they are GENERALLY less "snobby" than cats, but there are snobby dogs and needy cats.
