They are somewhat effective, but they draw too much power to be efficient. You will be blowing circuits or fuses almost any time you want to run anything besides lights with your heater. You may want to invest in a heating system along with closeable vents.

A great way to save energy and lower utilities bills is through the combination of central heat and electric space heaters. Modern electric space heaters usually have ceramic heating elements rather than nichrome wires, and are fan-forced with a blower or squirrel-cage fan. These distribute heat much more evenly, and allow them to be encased in plastic, nearly eliminating the chance of burns or fire. Mine is electric. Inside is oil that it heated by the electricity and then circulated out by a fan and vent. Looks like a mini version of an old time range.

What type of electric element do electric heaters use?

It depends on the size of the element in the heater. It should say what its rating is on the appliance. If there is no rating then the best way to work it out is to turn everything else off and see how much the electricity meter registers in one hour. If it is 2 kilowatts for instance then then the element is 2000 watts and you know it will use 2kw per hour. This assumes it won't be turned on and off by its thermostat which normally happens as it reaches it's final temperature.
