In my opinion, absolutely. According to statistics published by Women and Hollywood on the top 100 grossing films of 2019, “women represented...12% of directors...20% of writers...26% of producers”, which is incredibly low when compared to the share of the audience market that women moviegoers make up (approximately 51%). Not to mention, female-centered stories do not get as much buzz or commercial excitement as their male-focused counterparts.
However, markets are starting to respond to diversity casting and storytelling that is focused on characters of many backgrounds, which gives me hope for the future of cinema. The more we can tell new stories in new ways, the better!
