Are flea collars a bad thing? Some say so, and I say yes as well. Most flea collars have chemicals that kill fleas. Ya, that is a wonderful thing isn't it? A flea-less cat or dog. But did you know that most flea collars have a chemical that sinks into your pets fat or skin. It stays there and creates pores of this flea killing gas. EW!!! Pores on your animal that stay there the rest of their life. Then what happens when the gas goes away. You better not think that the pores go away. No sir, they stay were they are. Then fleas can lay eggs in there and it will be even more difficult for your pet to get the fleas off. So you pretty much are torturing your pet worse.

No, if they were bad they couldn't be sold. However some cats are sensitive to the chemicals in the collar.

Yes and no. Most cats are sensitive to flea collars and it could kill them. Just don't get the Hartz brand.
Its varies from each individual dog, from a veterinary point of view they do no justice to use as the dog still suffer from the ectoparasites commonly found. Owners also seem to forgot that the house may also be infested with fleas, eggs and lavae. Speak to your veterinarian for free and helpful advice that's what we get paid for!

Flea collars are an incredibly effective method of treating flea infestations, which can cause significant problems for your pet.

So what are the side effects of flea collars? A close look at their product brochures shows that the side effects are pretty lethal to fleas and ticks. Their targets include deer ticks, American dog ticks, brown dog ticks, and lone star ticks. Fleas on the other hand have an expected life of just 24 hours once the collar is applied and only 2 hours if they are a new infestation arriving on the animal. Wouldn't you hate to be a flea or tick!

But what is it that has the power to act in such a way? And can the flea and tick collar side effects be a concern for our animals? Taking a closer look at a flea and tick collar safety brochure (as an example) and we see the active ingredients are listed as Flumethrin and Imidacloprid. Flumethrin is a pyrethroid insecticide that is used externally in veterinary medicine against parasitic insects and ticks on cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and dogs. Imidacloprid on the other hand is an insecticide which acts as a neurotoxin which act on the central nervous system of insects and has a very low toxicity to mammals.

But what does this mean for our pets and are there side effects to be concerned about? Well, yes and no. The real answer depends entirely on your animal and unfortunately it is hard to truly assess the safety. For the majority of animals, if there are any side effects of collar use, they will be minimal. Dog collar side effects can include localised skin irritation, hair loss or rubbing from the physical collar. Such issues that are mirrored by cat collar side effects. Issues arise when you place your cat flea collar or tick collar for dogs on an animal that is allergic to the active ingredients. Seizures, diarrhea and vomiting are possible, however we must stress that these are extreme cases. For the majority of animals, flea collars are both safe and effective but how can you know if your pet is one of the unlikely allergic animals? Unfortunately there really isn't any way to know in advance if your pet is allergic. Close observation for a period of time after its application will certainly help you pick up on collar side effects before they get too serious. As with anything in life, a treatment is only useful if it is effective. Not treating for fleas and ticks will cause issues that far outweigh those possible using a flea collar. The purchase of a flea collar will provide many months of protection. Furthermore, tick and flea collar side effects are unlikely to cause any significant concern.

How long do flea collars last?

Flea collars are not a good idea, and can actually be quite toxic to the animal. There is no way you can tell how much of the chemical is going on the animal's skin (if any) and over how long a period. Thus, you can't really tell when they aren't working. Another problem with these collars are that the chemicals in the collar will kill adult fleas ONLY, and not the larvae. A proper product given by your veterinarian is the best solution for flea treatment.
