No, they are native to Alabama. In fact where you see one regular squirrel there could be as many as 5 flying squirrels around. They come out at night, so are rarely seen.

My uncle use to catch them in a small trap box and used Pecan nuts for bait. Kept them in his shirt pocket with a string around their necks. Some times they got loose at school and caused some entertainment in the classroom.
