Well it really depends on the age of the children. If they are under 8 I would not suggest it as Dogue de Bordeaux's are very strong and can easily knock over a child. It also depends on the temperament of the dogue as they are usually lovely and friendly with children, like my one doesn't mind me and my brothers playing with him and he loves attention especially hugs, but if you know the father and mother can be unsafe with children I would suggest about age 13 and over.
Tools? French mastiffs are a type of dog and rarely are smart enough to use tools of any kind.

The Perro de Presa Canario is a dog of the Molosar-type. These dogs are closely related to English mastiffs, bull mastiffs, and French mastiffs.
Mastiffs, Fila Brasileiros, and Neapolitan Mastiffs are all working dogs. Mastiffs originated in England, Fila Brasileiros in Brazil, and Neapolitan Mastiffs in Italy. Neapolitan Mastiffs are typically the most expensive and the largest, followed in both categories by Mastiffs and Fila Brasileiros. These breeds all have dense coats that are easy to groom and shed moderately.
French Mastiffs are a very large breed of dogs and will normally therefore mature at a later age and the French Mastiff is a slow maturer. Not mentally but physically.
They are mastiffs, though I am not sure what type. By their size, I wonder if they are Neopolitan Mastiffs.
