first of all,they are not pitvipers.they belong to viper(viperinae) subfamily,because they don't have those thermoloccating pits between eye and nostril..

Secondly:yes,they are endangered,at least i know they are found pretty rare last time,especially east african gaboon viper(B.gabonica gabonica).
