it depends on the type of gecko. most geckos have toe pads, which make them excellent climbers. however, some species of gecko, such as the leopard gecko, have claws instead of toepads, which does not allow them to grip vertical surfaces.
Day geckos primarily live in rainforests and other tropical areas, and so are natural climbers. Their toes have sticky pads on the ends that allow them to climb on just about any surface, including a 90 degree wall or even a ceiling.
