I had a Great Dane my self but he recently passed away. Ive had him since i was 7 and he has always been so good around kids. But the only thing is they do have a very powerful tail.
I would recommend a Great Dane for anyone Except if you live in an apartment)
People say because they are so big they are outside dogs, not to say they don't like to stay outside but tend to like attention!
Also they only live for a short amount of time, mine only lived for seven years to me it's not enough time with him.
Hope this helped.

No. They require a lot of attention and training and they eat a lot of dog food per month. And they are just as happy inside as they are outside. Not to mention there very large size. I would recommend a Dane, but not to first time dog owners.

Generally speaking, yes, they are good with cats and other animals, especially if introduced at a young age. Danes are known for having excellent temperaments and patience when it comes to other animals (including dogs) and small children.

Danes NEED to be socialized at a young age with people and pets, because for some reason, Great Danes seem to be the only dogs where manners slip in humans. They say never stare at a dog, never go and mess around when you don't know it, but people do this and more to Great Danes because they find them fascinating- their sheer size, probably. Therefore, socialization is essential, because otherwise walks will be unbearable and dangerous for you, the dog and the public.

When it comes to cats and other animals, the dog should be rewarded and treated from a young age whenever another animal comes into view. That way they learn that they are not a threat, but a reward.

When on walks, if you see another dog or person do not stress out, because the dog senses it. Keep walking quietly and calmly (no reassurance from 'Mommy' because otherwise the dog thinks there really is something to be afraid of) and only pause for a second or two to allow the dogs to sniff and say 'hi' before casually walking on. As you do so, say 'come on' to your dog in a sweet tone. This means that if ever you get into a sticky situation with a dog or any other animal, you can simply say come on and you can trust that your dog will do exactly that because he has been taught to every time he passes an animal.

So, yes, with good socialisation, Great Danes can be good with cats and other animals, in the house or outside on walks, and their naturally god temperament will help!!

Yes they are. To be on the safer side, it is better to supervise the dog in the initial few days he is with a kid just to ensure that they both get along fine. Once a dog bonds with a kid, he will do anything and everything he/she can to protect the kid.
