The question was asked about pickup covers, not the pickguard, and the answer is, no, the plastic covers that go over the pickups aren't necessary, they are cosmetic, but it would sure look ugly without them.

∙ 12y agoIt depends on the pickup. If the pickup has adjustable poles or staggered poles, you need to have them exposed. If the pickup has flat poles (even for all 6 strings) you can put a cover over all of the pickup and get essentially the same sound as long as you adjust the height between the pickup and strings properly. Some like to take off the covers just to show the pickup, but some exposed pickups will get damaged without a cover. - MCE Guitars
