  2. Its is a possessive reference to an inanimate object or thing

Many people are confused by it's and its because they sound alike and their spelling is almost identical. If you're not sure which one to use, change your sentence to use IT IS. If the new sentence makes sense, use it's. If the sentence reads as gibberish with IT IS and / or it refers to possession, use its.

For example, should the sentence be "The dog ate it'sdinner." or "The dog ate its dinner."? First, the dinner belongs to the dog, so there's a reference to possession. Second, if you try the sentence with IT IS you get "The dog ate it is dinner." which is nonsense wording. Therefore, the correct sentence is the second one; "The dog ate itsdinner."
