Yes, whales are SUPER smart! I work with all kinds and they're all smart! Killer whales are smart because they learn sign language. Belugas are smart because they learn really fast. White and blue whales are able to do upthrusts (When a whale flips to keep itself from sinking. The whale floats for a little while before upthrusting again.) by themselves without learning.

They are very intelligent, which is why they have been trained in captivity to do various tricks for rewards, and so have been kept in Marine World type exhibits for years. They are also smart enough and opportunistic enough to have learned that if they follow ice-breakers that they can get further into the ice pack and get to seals and penguins that would have been beyond their reach.

The true proof of intelligence, in my opinion, is the fact that each killer whale pod develops its own "dialect" of sounds to communicate with each other; scientists tracking killer whale migrations have actually been able to identify pods by identifying these sounds.

Also, they have developed very sophisticated techniques for capturing their preferred prey, such as:

  • Co-operatively herding fish such as herring together into tight groups and then slapping them with their tails to stun them. Otherwise a herring would be too much effort for too small a reward for such a large animal.
  • Surprising young and unwary sea lions off the coast of Patagonia by chasing after them right into the shallows and then lunging with a great snap of their powerful jaws.
  • Breaking through sea ice from below to surprise seals and penguins, or seeing them on ice-floes and then pushing upwards on the floe to tip the prey into the water. Alternatively two whales may rush at an ice floe which is then washed over by a large wave which dislodge the seal or penguin.

While killer whales are predators, no deliberate attacks on humans have ever been recorded. In fact, they are often curious and will come right up to boats or humans to "check them out".
