Labrador retrievers are retrieving dogs. They are bred to retrieve birds that have been shot over water and bring them back. They are trained to have a "soft" mouth so that they do not damage the bird when carrying it back to the hunter. They are good swimmers, and have an excellent sense of smell so that they can find the dead or wounded birds in water or swampy areas.
