They are if you can get parts and like to work on them especially the suspension which some people change over to springs. If you get a low mileage one you can probably get it cheap. They are pretty quick for a heavy car and the gas mileage isn't too bad either.

I was hoping someone would ask me that. I have a 96 mark viii - i bought it for $1500 (Awesome condition everything worked perfect.) After about 8 months of racing random cars everyday, the car would shake violently in and out of gears - and eventually drive turned into neutral. You MAY have a linkage problem, but not likely with a mark viii as it is not a common problem. If your car goes into reverse and moves but does not in drive - then your transmission is no good. I did this with mine (found out later that the one i had was not original). Check out question "How to change transmission in mark 8" describes how it is done exactly.
