I haven't held one but they shouldn't be too heavy. I think the are about a wooden chair's weight otherwise you wouldn't be able to march with them

By far the funnest ones are the marching bass drums. You can experience an awesome time playing in a drum line and working as team to create cool beats and you get a good workout at the same time. Concert bass drums are cool if you are into that.
