There wasn't wholesale factory type cloth making. It was done at home as part of the chores for women. Linen and wool were used. It isn't until the "spinning jenny" in the 1800's that cloth will be made in large amounts.
So Spinning was a major occupation of women in medieval times. They would spin wool and flax into thread, both for their own use and to sell to professional weavers. In early medieval times, both men and women worked as weavers, but in the later medieval period women were generally squeezed out of the trade by men.

I am not really sure what that reason is, but I think women are less easily satisfied with the way things are, or, put another way, (speaking as a man) men are more willing to be lazy.
