Within the body of everyone there are good and bad microorganisms. In a healthy person the good microorganisms will keep the bad ones at bay so that the body will remain healthy. At times they loose the battle and the person will become sick. Substitute medicines are then administered to help strengthen the army of good microorganisms so that they will turn the tide of the battle.

What is considered to be the oldest mechanism to generate ATP?

Considering that earths atmosphere in the beginning was toxic to breathe and the first believed signs of life were bacteria I would think that the bacteria relied on photosynthesis and the toxins in the air to make C6H12O6 or glucose and O2 which would explain the oxygen explosion, but as far as relying on oxygen there really wouldn't be an anaerobic need to produce ATP through glycolysis until later in evolution
