It honestly depends on the type of mod; a huge mod that contains other mods is not suggested for an old computer. Since mods do effect the memory of a minecraft game, it is suggested for a few small mods or one large mod. Too much mods may crash the computer. I like playing minecraft the way it is, keeping minecaft from being too complicated may prevent a future computer crash.
yes but Mojang don't support it also you have to protect your .jar file just in case something goes wrong. So just make a copy. But make sure you scan the file(s) you downloaded for viruses. And make sure you do it right
