They are distantly related. African lions are from the genus panthera and mountain lions from the genus puma. Both belong to the family felidae - the cats.

Both the lions, the African lion and mountain lions could well be related. As they have a similar build and roar.

The name "starfish" and "mountain lion" are both misnomers. A starfish is not a fish and a mountain lion is not a lion. So I guess they are similar in that their names are misleading. Although a mountain lion is much more related to a lion than a starfish is to a fish. Mountain lions share the same Family name with lions, Felidae.

Mountain lion, or African lion? North American Mountain lions are smaller than African lions. It's doubtful a N. Am Mountain Lion could kill a full grown grizzly. Any full grown lion could kill a grizzly cub bear though.
