I have been doing my own oil changes for most of the time we have owned the car. I always replace the oil drain plug washer with new ones (purchased from a Hyundai dealer) yet there has always been a slight leak at the plug; not enough to even require adding oil between changes but annoying as it leaves stains on the driveway.

I finally decided to investigate so I put the car up on ramps, drained the oil, and crawled under it with a mirror to investigate. The problem turns out to be four raised "bumps" that appear to be spot welds holding the threaded insert that the oil drain plug screws into. These welds are within the outside diameter of the washer and prevent it from completely sealing.

My solution was to use a slightly small OD crushable washer purchased at a local auto parts store. No more leak.

Comment on something else: The factory shop manual calls for removing the bumper cover (which requires removing the headlight assemblies) in order to replace the windshield washer pump. Not necessary. Remove the two clips at the front of the fender liner, pull it down, and you're looking at the pump. Takes about 5 minutes start to finish.

How do you test the water pump on a 2001 Hyundai accent?

To test the water pump on a 2001 Hyundai Accent, first, inspect for any visible leaks around the pump and check for any unusual noises while the engine is running. Next, ensure the engine is cool, then remove the radiator cap and start the engine; observe the coolant flow in the radiator. If there is no flow or the pump appears to be leaking, it may indicate a faulty water pump. Additionally, you can check for excessive play in the pump's pulley, which can also indicate wear or failure.
