Panama is a former Spanish colony, until independence in 1821. Guyana was never a Spanish colony. Apart from the indigenous Amerindian people, it was first settled by the Dutch, and became a British colony in 1831, known as British Guiana. British Guaina became the independent country Guyana in 1966, and declared itself a republic in 1970. It is still a member of the Commonwealth of Nations (also known as the British Commonwealth).
