Yes, the Carolina parakeet is extinct. Carolina parakeets were the only species of parrot native to the United States of America. These birds went extinct in the wild in 1904 and then in captivity in 1918. They went extinct because of deforestation and because farmers killed flocks who came and ate their crops. They were also frequently hunted for the use of their feathers in fashion. They also would flock back to places where dead or dying birds were, making hunting easier. Ornithologist Noel F. Snyder speculated that the final cause of their extinction was poultry disease, but no proof has ever been found backing up the claim.
The Paradise Parrot is in an unknown category due to the fact that many people think that this lovely species is extinct and many believe that this species is still alive. Honestly I have hope for this Parrot and believe there are still afew pairs out there continuing on with their lives.
The last recorded sighting was in 1922 but there have been other sightings from people who had not photographed this bird and therefore were not believed. There was sightings of 5 paradise parrots in 2007 from February to March. Apparently the people who sighted them then were not believed either.
I think it is stupid because so many people have given up on this wonderful species that has been sighted in the last 5 years and only few people are actually believing and having hope for this species and actually doing something.
Not really... In the Caribbean (Trinidad) . I see them by the flock on a daily basis in the morning and evening. They make loud noises in flight especially if the weather is inclement.
Parrots are becoming extinct due to poachers in South America and Mexico. Trapping and hunting has reduced the number of parrots greatly.
