The gravestone or headstone is placed at the "head" of a person. A footstone is sometimes placed at the foot of a grave. Most babies have footstones rather than headstones. This is because infants were buried at the feet of a parent (usually the mother) or a grandparent, or above (on top) of a parent or grandparent. This saved the family money - instead of having to open (dig) a whole grave for a tiny baby.

As a side note, people are always moved feet first, whether living and in the hospital, or in a casket to the hearse or to the gravesite.

Also graves were typically arranged to face the rising sun, but not all headstones face that way.
