If you're just joining the reserves, you can generally get away with having them so long as you don't wear them in uniform or set foot on a base with them in. Don't even try to hide them with retainers; the sergeant or whoever is in charge of you will get close enough to notice them, and you will catch all kinds of hell if he does (as you are flagrantly disobeying an order and trying to hide it).
