There are 2 main reasons why planes are fast. First they have extremely powerful engines. Commercial airliners have engines that produce 70,000-90,000 lbs of thrust. Secondly, airplanes are very aerodynamic ( a measurement of how much force the air puts on an object). The more streamlined a plane is, the less HP is required to go the same speed. To look at it a different way, a more streamlined airplane can go faster with the same power.
