No. Poodles are really from Germany, 'Poodle' comes from 'Pudel', a germanic word meaning 'puddle'. They were bred as water dogs, hence their other name 'puddle dogs'.

standard and miniature poodles were used for water retrievle. toy poodles were bred for comanionship. in france, white toy poodles were treasured so much, that if a comman person touched one without permission, he would get his hand cut off. though people think poodles are sissy puffballs, they are wonderful, friendly dogs. they now exel in agility, flyball, obedience, and conformation.

You've got toy poodles, miniature poodles and you've got the standard poodles. The standard poodles are the largest.

There are 3. Toy poodles, Miniature poodles and Standard Poodles (size order- small to large). Some people call incredibly small poodles teacup poodles, but they are not recognised as a size, neither are giant poodles. Giant poodles/Royal Standard Poodle is what they call poodles if they are are over 27" at the shoulder.They are not recognised as an official size. There are only 3 sizes that are recognised.

Standard poodles were initially bred in the 17th century, Germany as water/retriever dogs. however, they were very attractive, and by the late 18th century, France had re-bred them, much smaller (toy and minature poodles) these were bred as lap/companion dogs for the upper class, as often seen in portraits.
