Jazz is a collective word for a whole range of 20th century styles, principally of black American creation which includes jazz related genres like blues or ragtime.
Ragtime however is a composed instrumental genre, primarily for piano and principally created by black Americans, that combines syncopated melodies with the forms of the march; the syncopated style of this genre.

∙ 14y agoRagtime isn't actually jazz, strictly speaking. Jazz is based a lot more on improvisation whereas ragtime is pretty much composed. Also, while jazz (at least most pre-1950 jazz) is based rhythmically on the swung eighth note, ragtime doesn't have that--I guess you could say ragtime is more like a march than a jazz tune. Also, ragtime is generally for solo piano, and most jazz is for a larger group (big band or small ensemble)...I think there are a few ragtime pieces for brass but not much. but, ragtime is pretty similar to jazz of that time (early 1900's-ish) harmonically, and it sort of gave rise to stride piano, which sounds a bit like really improvisational ragtime.

∙ 12y agoDixieland originated in New Orleans. The standard instrumentation for a Dixieland band was trumpet, Trombone, clarinet, bass (or tuba), guitar (or banjo), piano, and drums. Dixieland drums resembled marching band drums; it was square compared to swing drums. Dixieland was centered around collective improvisation. Basically, everyone improvised at the same time.
Ragtime was primarily reserved for piano. It was mostly classical. It is considered one of the first Jazz styles. It's characterized by "stride piano" and it's syncopation. A very famous example of ragtime is "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin.
Ragtime first appeared in the 1890s, while Dixieland appeared in the early 1900s and 1910s
