Domestic rats are best kept in groups of two or more. They are naturally social creatures who will suffer if lest alone, and the company of a human is no replacement for the company of another rat.

Rats are extremely social animals. In the wild they live in packs of hundreds! In captivity they do better in pairs (same-sex preferred) unless you are willing to spend a lot of time with him/her. Otherwise, they get lonely and tend not to live as long.
