It depends on several factors. One factor is if it cold or warm out. They hibernate and tend to be sluggish when it is colder. If they are on a nice warm rock in the sun I wouldn't bother one. Instead of "chasing after you" a rattler will coil and spring from the coiled position. They can spring twice their length and this can be very fast.
