Correct. The old shilling piece was equivalent to 1/20 of a pound sterling, so the first 5p coins were made the same size so that the 2 could co-circulate. It made things a bit easier during decimalisation because fewer new coins were needed, plus vending machines didn't have to be reworked so extensively.
However the old coins sizes were related to the days when the pound was actually based on silver and was worth a lot more. That meant they were much larger than necessary today and were cumbersome to carry. In the early 1990s the Royal Mint downsized the 5p, 10p, and 50p coins so they'd be easier to handle. Shillings were withdrawn at that point.
