Correct. The old shilling piece was equivalent to 1/20 of a pound sterling, so the first 5p coins were made the same size so that the 2 could co-circulate. It made things a bit easier during decimalisation because fewer new coins were needed, plus vending machines didn't have to be reworked so extensively.

However the old coins sizes were related to the days when the pound was actually based on silver and was worth a lot more. That meant they were much larger than necessary today and were cumbersome to carry. In the early 1990s the Royal Mint downsized the 5p, 10p, and 50p coins so they'd be easier to handle. Shillings were withdrawn at that point.

Are shillings still used in the UK or is it just the pence now?

Decimal currency was introduced in Great Britain on the 15th of February, 1971. From then, there were 100 (New) Pence to the Pound (Sterling). The 5 New Pence coin which replaced the Shilling was introduced in 1968 along with the 10 New Pence coin which replaced the Florin. The Shilling coins still circulated along with the 5 New Pence coins until 1990, when the 5 Pence coin was reduced in size and was subsequently no longer visually identifiable as the equivalent of the Shilling coin.

What is the 5.0?

50 Pence is half of a british pound. As for the coin, it was first the 10 shilling gold coins such as the half-sovereign after the first world war, the half-sovereign stopped circulating widely and was mostly replaced by the 10 shilling note by then. In preparation for the decimalization of the pound in 1971, the 50p coin was made from 1969 to replace the 10 shilling note, the idea was the coin would last much longer in circulation than the 10 shilling note would. The 50p is 75% copper, 25% nickel and is a heptagonal shape. From 1969-1994 it was the original, large size when it was replaced by the current size in 1997. The large-sized 50p coins are no longer legal tender in the UK .
