They were at first thought to have been merely secular paintings, produced in idle time or to explain and teach the young. However, archaeologists noticed certain pecularities such as an exact orientation to the rising sun and some patterns formed by the positions of paintings, and decided that the artists were priests and these paintings represented religious stories.
