As a safety feature we have added fire sprinkler systems to the thatched roof. When considering one check with your home owners insurance along with plans for the fire sprinkler system. We have thatched roofs at all our Hales' (guest quarters) at the Kona Village Resort. They are pretty safe.. Ours have been used for over 30 years with continued maintenance...
