They are dimensionally similar, but they are not exactly the same. There are differences in projectile grains and neck angles - the latter can cause improper headspacing if used in a chamber not intended for that cartridge.
If you are talking about the 7.62x51 and the .308 Winchester then yes they can safely be interchanged
Known as 7.62 NATO, it is similar to, but not EXACTLY the same as the .308 Winchester.
Yes and no. Many .300 caliber cartridges use a bullet that is actually .308 inches in diameter- such as the 30-06. However, CARTRIDGES such as the .300 Winchester Magnum are a different size/shape than the .308 Winchester cartridge- they do not interchange.
Your winchester model 70 chambered in .308 Win.is a short action.
The cartridge in question is the .300 Winchester Magnum, and not the .308 WinMag. The .308 cartridge is about 16mm shorter than the .300 Winchester Magnum casing. The two are NOTinterchangeable.
Any .308 Winchester ammunition.
When speaking of ammunition it is imperative to be precise with your numbers. The .308 Winchester is interchangable with the 7.62 NATO military round
What I have found is its 1-10" for 308.
A lever action rifle made by Savage in 308 Winchester.
The 21 pound M-60 machine gun fired a .308 caliber round,(I know because I carried one).that being said;yes your Winchester model 70 will fire this round. You of course will have to strip the rounds out of the belt to chamber them in your model 70.
.308 and 7.62 NATO are the same round. In a sense, yes, they are comparable. Obviously the rifle will be fed by magazine whereas the light machine gun is belt-fed, but the rounds are the same dimensions.
No. The 7.62x54R round is a rimmed cartridge, first developed in 1891 for use with the Mosin Nagant rifle. The .308 Winchester is derived from the .300 Savage, and has dimensions similar to - but not identical to - the 7.62x51 NATO cartridge, which is also derived from the .300 Savage.Additionally, the 7.62x54R actually has a bullet diameter of 7.92mm, vs. the 7.8mm (.308 inches) of the .308 Winchester and 7.62x51.Another stark difference between the two is that the .308 is not a rimmed cartridge, instead using a cannlure.
