The ninja were poor farmers in Japan. They were upset at the Samurais oppressive rule, so they took matters into their own hands. The reason the samurai believed they were demon is because they could "disappear" in a cloud of mist. But actually, the ninja used "black eggs". black eggs are hollowed out eggs with crushed glass, and sand inside. When in trouble the ninja would crush the egg and throw the powder in the face of their attacker, then escape. The ninja were human, but were very cunning.
