Born John Royce Mathis on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas, Johnny Mathis is the fourth born child of seven children born to Clemmie Lamont Mathis, Sr. and Mildred Boyd Mathis. His eldest siblings are a sister Marguerite, brother Clem, Jr. (now deceased), and sister Elizabeth. After Johnny Mathis' birth his parents had three more children which are Mathis' youngest siblings: brother Ralph, sister Linda, and brother Michael.
Both of Johnny Mathis' parents are African-American. His mother (Mildred Boyd Mathis) was fair complexioned and his father (Clem Mathis, Sr.) had a similar bronze complexion as his son, Johnny Mathis. Like over 80 percent of people in the United States who are classified as "Black" and/or "African American," Mathis has a mixed ancestry.
Most of Johnny Mathis' concert tour books from the 1980s onward have photos of him with his six siblings. Their birth order is as follows: Marguerite, Clemmie, Jr, Elizabeth, Johnny, Ralph, Linda, and Michael. You can also see a recent (circa 1980s) photo of Mathis with all of his brothers and sisters during a segment of the DVD "Johnny Mathis :Home For Christmas," while he sings "The Christmas Song." Mathis' eldest brother Clem, Jr. is now deceased.
