Are the beaches of Peru higher than mount Everest?

It depends how you measure height. Usually, a mountain's height is measured above sea level, which makes Mount Everest the highest mountain on Earth. However, another way of measuring is to measure the distance from the centre of the Earth. Because the Earth isn't a sphere but an oblate spheroid (with the equator further from the centre than the poles) then sea level at Peru is actually further from the centre of the Earth than the peak of Mount Everest.
